What is Saju? Korean Four Pillars, explained.

Ancient precision. Your move.

Not fate, but a baseline: 사주팔자 saju palja maps your birth year, month, day, and hour into a chart of what runs strong, what drains you, and what to practice.

Day Masters

The ten day masters.

Your day master (일간 ilgan) is the character your entire chart is read around — ten types, five elements, each in a yang and a yin expression.

  • Yang Wood

    The Oak

    갑목

You were built to lead — and you knew it before anyone told you.

  • Yin Wood

    The Vine

    을목

You bend. You don't break. That's the power most people miss.

  • Yang Fire

    The Sun

    병화

Every room you enter gets brighter. That's not an accident.

  • Yin Fire

    The Flame

    정화

You don't shine for everyone. You shine for the right people.

  • Yang Earth

    The Mountain

    무토

People come to you to get grounded. You've always been the anchor.

  • Yin Earth

    The Garden

    기토

You make things grow just by being near them.

  • Yang Metal

    The Sword

    경금

You have standards. You hold them. Most people don't understand why.

  • Yin Metal

    The Jewel

    신금

You notice everything. Every flaw, every detail, every off note.

  • Yang Water

    The Ocean

    임수

You see ten moves ahead. That's why surface-level never satisfies you.

  • Yin Water

    The Rain

    계수

You absorb what others don't notice. That's not sensitivity — it's intelligence.

Your Eight Characters

A Saju chart starts as four pairs.

Each pillar has a heavenly stem above an earthly branch.

Yang Wood갑목
Yang Water임수
Yang Fire병화

Together, the four pairs become the eight characters your reading is built from — the same chart your free card renders.

The highlighted character is the day stem — The Oak, Yang Wood. That is this chart’s day master: the character the other seven are read against.

The Four Pillars

Four moments of birth. Four layers of you.

Each pillar is one coordinate of your birth — and each one reads a different layer of how you operate. Together they hold the eight characters your entire chart is built from.

Hour ·

Interior

Private desire and long-range direction.

Day ·

Self

Temperament, appetite, stress, and leverage.

Month ·

Public climate and inherited patterns.

Charts follow the traditional layout: hour pillar on the left, year pillar on the right — reading from your innermost layer outward.

Five Elements

Five elements. Two cycles.

In 명리 myeongli, the elements are not isolated traits. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water feed, drain, control, and correct each other.

Friction, discipline, and pressure.

A chart becomes personal when you see which relationships are doing the work.

Common Questions

Q.Is Saju the same as astrology?

No. Astrology reads planetary positions; Saju reads the East Asian calendar of elements and stems. Different lineage — Korean myeongli (명리), not the zodiac.

Q.Is Saju the same as Bazi?

Same Four Pillars root (八字). Bazi is the Chinese lineage; Saju is the Korean one, with its own interpretive conventions.

Q.Do I need my exact birth time?

No. Year, month, and day still give you your day master and elemental balance. The hour pillar adds timing detail — add it anytime.

Q.Is Saju fortune telling?

No. Saju Lore maps patterns — what runs strong, what drains you, what to practice — as software-generated reports for self-reflection and entertainment.
